Correlation between hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and average blood glucose: can HbA1c be reported as estimated blood glucose concentration?

چکیده

Glycation is the nonenzymatic addition of sugar to amino groups of proteins. While virtually any protein in the body can be glycated, for convenience and ease of obtaining a sample, glycated hemoglobin is measured in the blood obtained from a patient. Blood glucose concentrations exhibit wide diurnal fluctuations due to food ingestion, exercise, and other factors. In contrast, the concentration of glycated hemoglobin remains relatively stable with time. This is due to the life span of red blood cells, which is usually ~120 days. In individuals with a normal erythrocyte life span, glycated hemoglobin is directly proportional to the blood glucose concentration over the preceding 8 to 12 weeks.1

Monitoring HIV-infected Patients with Diabetes: Hemoglobin A1c, Fructosamine, or Glucose?

BACKGROUND Published studies report inappropriately low hemoglobin A1C (HbA1c) values that underestimate glycemia in HIV patients. METHODS We reviewed the charts of all HIV patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) at our clinic. Fifty-nine patients had HbA1c data, of whom 26 patients also had fructosamine data. We compared the most recent HbA1c to finger-stick (FS) glucose averaged over three mon...

The association between estimated average glucose levels and fasting plasma glucose levels in a rural tertiary care centre

The level of hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), also known as glycated hemoglobin, determines how well a patient’s blood glucose level has been controlled over the previous 8-12 weeks. HbA1c levels help patients and doctors understand whether a particular diabetes treatment is working and whether adjustments need to be made to the treatment. Because the HbA1c level is a marker of blood glucose for the pre...

630 The Clinical Use of Hemoglobin A 1 c Saudek

Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) has been accepted as an index of glycemic control since the mid-1970s and is the best marker for diabetic microvascular complications. Clinically, it is now used to assess glycemic control in people with diabetes. Assays are most reliable when certified by the National Hemoglobin Standardization Program but are subject to confounders and effect modifiers, particularly in ...

Influence of Iron Deficiency Anemia on Hemoglobin A1C Levels in Diabetic Individuals with Controlled Plasma Glucose Level

Introduction: Hemoglobin A1C (HbA1c) reflects patient’s glycemic status over the previous 3 months. Previous studies have reported that iron deficiency may elevate A1C concentrations, independent of glycemia. This study is aimed to analyze the effect of iron deficiency anemia on HbA1c levels in diabetic population having plasma glucose levels in control. Methods: Totally, 120 diabetic, iron-def...
